When Will Students Transferring Schools Be Allowed To Register For Their Classes Westada

The inaugural grade of Owyhee High School students walked the halls for the start time on Thursday. Students navigated the schoolhouse and placed their items in shiny lockers without the crud of previous owners. The trophy case in the cafeteria stood empty. Teachers' classrooms, without projects from years by and graduation announcements from alumni, looked nigh sterile.

Students said the new schoolhouse gives them many opportunities, like enjoying a new facility, finding new friend groups and creating a new culture at the school.

"I expect at this as a great opportunity for those who need a fresh start," said sophomore Liv Mortensen, a member of Owyhee's educatee council who attended Superlative High as a freshman.

The majority of the student torso comes from Hawkeye, Meridian and Rocky Mount schools in West Ada. Owyhee opened with almost 1,500 students and has a capacity of ane,800 students.

Later helping a few students effigy out how to use the combination lockers for the start fourth dimension, biology teacher and baseball passenger vehicle Russ Wright started his showtime class, letting students know that the staff members in the schoolhouse are also starting fresh.

Hoping for a more normal yr

Students are hoping for consistency this yr. Jack Payne, a senior who transferred from Boise High, said he hasn't been able to accept a normal year of high schoolhouse due to COVID-nineteen, and that he struggled to stay motivated when classes were online. Jaden Kusar, also a senior, said she attended online school concluding year to accept a consequent schedule. Before that, Kusar attended Bishop Kelly.

Mortensen said she never felt like she was able to settle into her freshman twelvemonth considering classes were switching between online and in-person. She likewise said she struggled to make friends when her peers were masked and social distancing was enforced.

"I'1000 glad I go to come to Owyhee and get a fresh start here," she said.

Tucker McDonald, a junior who previously attended Rocky Mount, said he is excited to see what assemblies will look like at Owyhee — many of the students oasis't been to a high school associates due to COVID-xix protocols.

Masking was a mixed pocketbook on Thursday morning. On Tuesday night, W Ada trustees voted to require staff vesture masks in schools, but gave parents the option to opt their children out of wearing ane. On Midweek, nearly four,000 opt-out forms were received by the district.

Pupil leadership

Along with Elle Leishin (a sophomore previously from Rocky Mountain), Payne, Kusar, Mortensen and McDonald make upward the inaugural pupil quango for Owyhee High. Since there was no leap 2021 for Owyhee High, speech instructor and student council counselor Nic Warnecke said he met with administrators and decided to try something new when voting for council members: Social Media.

The Owyhee Loftier School Instagram account has over 2,000 followers, including most of the students. Warnecke sent students a link to vote for pupil quango via Instagram and student email. Students were able to spotter videos of those running for function and vote online over the summer.

Warnecke said information technology was important to get a pupil quango together before the start of the school year so they could immediately start building a student civilization, something that Primary Cliff Rice has been vocal most. To get to know each other, the educatee quango helped with the official ribbon cutting for the school and also organized open business firm tours earlier the campus opened.

"We can make it our own," Warnecke said.  "We just demand to exist very considerate of what legacy we want to first here."
